These Three Businesses Are Marketing in Unusual Ways

You’re walking down the street and suddenly a zombie rises up out of the sewer. You scream, throw your backpack at the thing and begin sprinting down the street.

And then someone cries out, “Watch The Walking Dead this week.” You stop, turn around, and see the zombie waving at you and smiling.

You walk back and it hands you your bag. You were just a victim. A victim of gorilla marketing.

Businesses employ interesting tactics to get leads and customers to buy all the time. AMC employed similar tactics to the above scenario in NYC. But what are smaller companies doing to uniquely get their customer’s attention?

Here are a few businesses doing something different in their marketing.

1. ClimbOnline’s Podcast

Podcasts began as an expansion to RSS feeds back in 2000. But they didn’t gain prominence until 2003.

With tech advances and the invention of the smartphone, podcasts went from something you downloaded on an ipod to something people can create with very little investment.

This is why podcast marketing can be an easy and still unusual marketing strategy. And this marketing company, ClimbOnline, recently began using it to bring information to their customers and leads.

They bring top marketing stories, tips and tricks, and even talk about what goes on under the hood at their company. This helps customers feel connected to the company in a way no other medium can.

Why? Because the traditional podcast format is conversational. And you feel like you’re sitting in a room with your best friends listening in on their conversation. That’s the magic of podcasting.

2. Elon Musk’s Car

Few people in the world have the money Musk does. The guy is a nerd with lots of money. And when he says he wants to launch a car into space, his underlings listen.

If I were as rich as he, this kind of marketing would be my shtick. And right now, somewhere in space is Elon Musk’s Red Tesla.

Anybody who paid attention to that SpaceX launch will never forget either Tesla or SpaceX. “Come buy the car that got launched into space,” it screams.

And when SpaceX becomes the company that makes it possible for us to travel to or through outer space, we’ll be clambering to travel with the company that launched a car into space.

3. PennyHoarder’s Bumper Sticker

The funny thing about the internet is that it’s based in the real world. Well, I guess that’s not all that funny, but it’s kind of useful.

Just because we conduct a lot of our lives online doesn’t mean that we can’t use the analog world to advertise as well.

Kyle Taylor, the founder of PennyHoarder once wanted to increase his site traffic. He decided to use bumper stickers.

He bought igetfreebeer.com. He permanently redirected the domain to one of his most popular articles. And then he put the domain on bumper stickers and sent them to college students to put up at universities across the country.

Funny enough, this was cheaper than an adwords campaign at $0.40 per visit.
